About RentCar Trip

RentCar Trip is an independent guide to the real cost of renting a car in the United States — the deposits, insurance choices, airport surcharges, and counter fees that turn an advertised daily rate into a very different final bill. We are not a rental company, a broker, or a booking site. We do not rent cars or take reservations. Our only job is to explain, in plain English, how rental pricing and policies actually work so you can make a confident decision before you reach the counter.

Why this site exists

Rental car pricing is deliberately hard to compare. The number in the search result is rarely the number on your receipt, and the difference — concession recovery fees, loss-of-use charges, debit-card holds, mandatory foreign liability insurance — is where travelers lose money. We started RentCar Trip to document those specifics one question at a time, using the companies’ own published terms rather than guesswork.

How we research every guide

Every guide is built from primary sources, not opinion. Before we publish or update an article, we check the claims against the original documents:

• Rental company terms and FAQs — the published policy pages of Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz and others, which is where age limits, deposit rules, and fee definitions actually live.
• Regulators and government sources — the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance, the U.S. State Department for cross-border rules, and state insurance departments for coverage questions.
• Insurance references — the Insurance Information Institute and card-network benefit guides for CDW, LDW, and liability specifics.

We link to those primary sources in each article so you can verify anything yourself. Every guide carries a “Last checked” date because rental policies change, and we re-check the load-bearing facts when we update.

How our guides are written and reviewed

We use modern writing tools, including AI, to help draft and structure our guides — but no guide is published on the strength of a tool alone. Every article is checked against the primary sources above, edited for accuracy, and dated before it goes live. Where a policy varies by company, location, or state, we say so rather than pretending there is one universal rule. If we cannot verify a specific number, we describe it as a range and tell you to confirm it in your own agreement.

Accuracy and corrections
